Show Review: Wednesday
Have you ever watched the TV series titled Stuck in the Middle? It was about teenager Harley Diaz struggling her way through life as the middle child in a family of six siblings, with the main character being played by Jenna Ortega. Six years later, Ortega is back as the main character of a show: Wednesday. With suspense, excitement, and humor, Wednesday is currently the #1 show on Netflix, releasing on Wednesday, November 23rd.
The Addams Family has been a hallmark of the horror-loving crowd for many years now, and director Tim Burton’s take on Wednesday Addams in Wednesday is truly a magnificent one. The death-obsessed daughter of Morticia and Gomez was played to perfection by Christina Ricci in the past who was actually in this show as a different character. So, the question was whether Jenna Ortega was fit for the role, and undoubtedly, Ortega played the role with perfection, stealing the show in every scene. Her delivery throughout the entire show was flawless as she didn’t even blink once, and her dance of the original Wednesday Lisa Loring was iconic.
After being expelled too many times from several different high schools, Wednesday’s parents decide to send her to Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts. Just as Wednesday is attempting to run away from the school, she begins to find mystery after mystery. From murders and monsters to secret societies, the town of Jericho goes through difficult times, and Wednesday seems to be at the center of everything. She soon realizes that she may be the only one who can help solve the town’s mysteries and more importantly, save all the outcasts.
Apart from the excellently played Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, Emma Myers plays Enid Sinclair, Wednesday’s bubbly roommate and first friend at Nevermore Academy. Some other characters in the show are Principal Weems played by Gwendoline Christie, Marilyn Thornill played by Christina Ricci, Tyler Galpin played by Hunter Doohan, and more. For the most part, each character fit and played their parts well.
The ending of the show is a bit chaotic and I felt there were too many twists and turns. However, all in all, the show was captivating and very interesting to watch. There was both light and dark humor that added to the story, and Wednesday’s evolution and journey throughout the show as a person was a nice touch. Season one of the show ended with hints of another season. Even though she’s stopped the chaos for now, Wednesday knows the town has many more mysteries in store.
