Movie Review: Falling for Christmas

‘Tis the season for hokey holiday entertainment, and we review one of the most anticipated releases staring a former A-lister looking to claw her way back into the mainstream.

Famous for her debut in the movie Mean Girls, Lindsay Lohan recently starred in the Netflix movie Falling for Christmas. Lohan plays the role of a spoiled heiress named Sierra Belmont, who works as “vice president of atmosphere” for her father’s ski resort in Aspen. At the beginning of the movie, the owner of the North Star Skiing Lodge Jake Russel reaches out to Beauregard about investing in his lodge, and is quickly turned down. Shortly after, Russel runs into Belmont at her father’s resort and accidentally spills hot cocoa on her designer jumpsuit. Their interaction was brief, as Belmont was too focused on the damage to her clothing. Sierra’s boyfriend, Tad decided to take Sierra on a mountain hike to propose to her. Tad describes himself as an influencer, and like Sierra, comes from wealth and privilege. While on their hike, Tad proposes to her. Sierra is ecstatic, so much so that she loses control of herself with a snowstorm and falls from a mountain, leaving her unconscious. Jake found her and Sierra realized she forgot who she was, and didn’t have any identification on her. Russel offers to let her stay at his resort until they can find her family, which Sierra accepts. Tad is left with a random guy in a winter shed. Later, he’ll reunite with Mr. Belmont at a police station when he and the stranger get arrested.

While at the resort, she learns to do small things like making her own bed, cooking and doing laundry. Russel and Belmont start to develop chemistry after spending so much time together and exchanging heartfelt moments. Sierra had been completely transformed as a person at that point. She became more sympathetic, kind, and humble. During her stay, she looked through a photo album with Jake’s mom, Alejandra. This is when Sierra thought of an idea to save the struggling lodge. She wanted to throw a party for alumni North Star visitors because the lodge represented a happy, traditional, place to them. In addition, Jake thought it would be a good idea because it was a way for her family to find her. At the party, she’s found by Beauregard.

He thanks Russel for taking care of his daughter. However, when she goes back to her old life she realized that she wasn’t really happy with her engagement with Tad and her overall lifestyle. She calls off the engagement and instead runs into Russel, who went to her place to confess his feelings for her. It was then that they kiss and become a couple.

Overall, there was a really happy ending to the story. The North Star Lodge became completely booked, and Sierra found her true love. It’s revealed at the end that none of it would’ve been possible without Jake’s daughter, Avy. In the beginning, she wished for a snowstorm, which is how Sierra fell off the mountain. And towards the end, she wished for Jake to find true love, which was Sierra. I personally enjoyed the movie a lot. It’s very similar to Hallmark movies, which may affect people’s opinions of it because there are many movies similar to Falling for Christmas. I didn’t think I would like it for that reason, but I found it to be very heartwarming. The movie helps tie Christmas into being a wonderful holiday, filled with joy and love.
