Movie Review: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

A new animated feature set in the “Shrek Cinematic Universe.”

DreamWorks Animation

I’m happy to convey that a friendly face has returned to us in theaters—Puss in Boots. The sequel to the original released in 2011 is subtitled “The Last Wish” and was released on December 21st, 2022, with Antonio Banderas again lending his voice to the eponymous feline. A new story from the fairytales of Shrek, DreamWorks presents a film without a doubt among the finest in the Shrek world and a great way to conclude yet another wonderful year. Lack of knowledge of previous Puss in Boots movies luckily won’t affect its magical experience.

The movie starts off with the iconic DreamWorks introduction that now includes fascinating new animations. Puss in Boots’s unique personality is shown through a musical fight with a rock monster the size of a skyscraper. He swiftly takes it down but unfortunately dies from getting crushed by a bell thrown into the air during the fight. Not to fret, remember, cats do have nine lives. The conflict arises when we find out Puss has just used his eighth life. It doesn’t seem to bother him until he meets death himself: the Big Bad Wolf, voiced by Narcos’s Wagner Moura. Wolf sets off on a quest to finally take all of Puss’s nine lives. After one short battle between Puss and Wolf, Puss is ready to give up until he overhears the story of the fallen star, which turns out to be capable of granting any singular wish. He sets off on an adventure with his companions Perro and Kitty Softpaws to save his life before Death takes it from him forever.

This movie is not just to be enjoyed by children, but by all ages. The audience is continuously given funny and relatable jokes for both younger and older audience members, and even an uplifting message about making the most of the life you are given. From its detailed new art style to its heartwarming comedy, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is undeniably the film we needed. It’s received so much positive feedback that news of a second part has already been floating around. So who knows maybe the adventures of Puss in Boots are not quite over just yet.
