On a recent darkening fall Sunday, we ventured out to sample and review Freddy’s seasonal Peppermint Oreo Shake, hoping to give an honest take on this highly anticipated holiday treat. With all the hype surrounding it, we were excited to dive in and see if it lived up to the fanfare. A quick run through the drive-thru procured some french fries (which we devoured sight unseen) and the target of our excursion, the Peppermint Oreo Shake. Unfortunately, our excitement didn’t last long. The Peppermint Oreo Shake made a bold first impression, bursting with a strong peppermint aroma and visible chunks of peppermint candy. From the first sip, though, we realized something was off. The peppermint flavor was overpowering, almost as if we were chewing hard peppermint candies. Each sip was crunchy with peppermint pieces, making it feel like we were biting into a chocolate-dipped candy cane instead of sipping a smooth milkshake. The texture was far from what we’d expect in a shake. It was way too crunchy and loaded with more peppermint than we expected. Even worse, the Oreo flavor was barely there. We struggled to find any sign of the Oreo flavor, and without that balance, the shake lost any real connection to its Oreo name. Instead of it being Oreo and peppermint it was more like peppermint in chocolate ice cream. Instead of a blend of peppermint and Oreo, it was a peppermint overload that left us feeling like we’d just chomped on a handful of candy canes. However, the consistency of the soft-serve ice cream was a pleasant surprise; it was not too soft and not too hard.
Freddy’s other, nonseasonal, shakes are a better bet if you want a more reliable tasty treat. For those who are diehard mint fiends, this shake might be worth a try. But if, like us, you enjoy peppermint in moderation, this might not be the winter treat for you. Our verdict? We give it a 4.5/10. It was definitely unique, but ultimately not the holiday delight we were hoping for. Save your money and skip this one unless you’re looking for an extreme peppermint experience.
