As the holiday season approaches, 2015 graduate Charlotte Hedican is looking forward to celebrating 6 years at her job. After her lengthy attendance at BT, she had lots of helpful advice to share!
What is your current occupation?
“My current title is Senior Account Manager. I work in the Brand Marketing & Communications division at Mutual of Omaha, where I primarily support our brand awareness digital media campaign (we run ads on platforms like Meta, YouTube, etc.) and manage our content marketing program.”
How did attending BT help you get there?
“I fundamentally believe BT played a huge role in my development and success. The opportunity to participate in so many activities is incredible. It allowed me to do a lot of things I didn’t think were possible (like being a cheer captain as a self-identified ‘non athlete’, take AP Calculus – even if I was bad at it, ha), participate in my passions (theatre, music), but also gave me the autonomy to navigate things like time management, interpersonal skills and organization at a young age. This also helped me discover my interests for a career – I took journalism on a whim and ended up really enjoying it, becoming co-editor in chief my senior year…And the personal meetings with college counselors are a huge benefit – making decisions for your future is hugely personal, so those helped make it less scary.”
Hedican continued by adding: “ This is small – but being able to take AP courses and dual enrollment was huge. It allowed me to study abroad in college and I was able to graduate from Loyola a semester early – this early graduation resulted in a full-time opportunity from my Mutual of Omaha internship…These ‘soft’ skills and ‘hard’ school skills like being able to write a paper effectively and communicate with superiors (teachers) set me up for success.”
What are some plans you have for the future?
“I see myself continuing to work in the digital and content marketing fields…On a personal level, I’m incredibly passionate about theatre and love to participate at various performing arts venues like the Omaha Community Playhouse…I’d love to continue to perform there, as well as continue to travel to new places. It teaches you so much and forces you out of your comfort zone – whether it’s a domestic or international destination.”
How/why do you give back to BT?
“I know from my experience that BT ‘practices what they preach’ and because BT fosters an inviting environment, it’s easy for me to want to show up as an alum. My youngest brother (Theo, ’26) is a junior, so it’s fun to come back for football games and see how the school has evolved. It’s also nice that BT has traditions that welcome alumni – between attending Gala and singing Carol of the Bells each holiday program, it’s a great opportunity to see some of my former classmates and BT faculty and staff – though it’s still tough to call them by their first names! I’ve also participated in a few alumni panels over the past few years; BT values their alums and their perspective, and that’s really important to shaping the future of the school.”
Hedican also mentioned the following as advice to current students, “Everything feels so intense when you’re in school. I remember being overwhelmed by wanting to do everything and make all the right decisions – and that never fully goes away because we’re only human. But the things that feel like the end of the world right now, truly aren’t. You have SO MUCH TIME to make a choice, change your mind, make the ‘wrong’ choice, make the right choice – it really does work out in the end, even if the journey feels tough. And it’s okay to feel like it’s tough, but there are so many adventures on the horizon.”
Personally, my favorite answer from the amazing alum was this: “At the end of the day, BT just provided a bounty of opportunities that the average school doesn’t provide – and I’m grateful!”
