Captain America: Brave New World introduces audiences to Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Sam Wilson as the new Captain America. The film has a familiar, yet engaging narrative with enough action for any Marvel fan. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 48% approval rating from critics, indicating mixed reviews, while audiences have responded more favorably with an 80% approval rating. The Brave New World movie is a great addition to the Marvel world, but also might be controversial for some viewers. Many die-hard Marvel fans have claimed they wished that Marvel hadn’t continued to make the Captain America movies without Steve Rodgers. They hoped that maybe instead of making new Captain America movies, maybe making a new series for a new superhero altogether.
While some have claimed to love the movie, a lot have made it clear they didn’t enjoy the movie. Abbi Gibbs, a junior at Brownell claimed it wasn’t as satisfactory as previous marvel movies. The New York Post claims that the plot was confusing, with unnecessary character storylines. Nevertheless, many Marvel fans have loved the movie. The movie authentically highlight African American culture through Sam Wilson’s leadership, storytelling, and undertones of empowerment. “Captain America: Brave New World” has potential to redefine the Marvel franchise as a new groups of heroes join the Avengers. It definitely delivers a strong performance, yet may still be lacking for some in depth or originality, falling short to the Marvel experience we all know and love.
