Marvel’s Thunderbolts brings together a group of unlikely, and emotionally complex heroes for a darker, more psychologically driven battle. Leading the battle there are some familiar faces like Yelena Belova, previously seen in Black Widow, and the infamous Winter Soldier. This movie, while exploring government control and betrayel, doesn’t always succeed in having a balanced tone. The film shifts between an action-packed storyline to a focus on mental health, creating a blend of genre that hasn’t been loved by all viewers. Many viewers and die-hard Marvel fans have complained about the lack of action in this film. However, many film critics have loved this movie, earning it a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score. While there’s no denying this film is entertaining, the real question is —can this group live up to the high standards previous Marvel heroes have set? According to a Brownell student Teagan, this movie was not as spectacular as previous Marvel fan-favorites.
Overall, this film was well-paced and brought light to mental health in a field where it usually isn’t represented. Even though this wasn’t what all viewers were expecting, hats off to Marvel for going out of their comfort zone and creating something young adult watchers can resonate with.
