Our new pope, Pope Leo XIV, was named the first American pope on May 8 of 2025. Speculations arose throughout many countries about the pope being American, and what his past brings to him. Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, Leo served as an altar boy and was ordained in 1982. Growing up, Pope Leo XIV lived in Peru spreading Catholicism and came back to the US three years later and was a priest in his home city. Then in 2014, Francis made him Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru. In 2023, he was named Archbishop and later a Cardinal. What are his views? In choosing his papal name, Leo has signified a commitment to dynamic social issues. According to BBC’s article, “Who is Robert Prevost, the new Pope Leo XIV?” Speaking last year about climate change, Cardinal Prevost said that it was time to move “from words to action”. Another important view is that he supports Pope Francis’ decision to allow women for the first time to join the Dicastery for Bishops, an administrative body that identifies and recommends future bishops to the Holy See. The pope has already done a myriad of things for the people and we will see where his leading in the Catholic Church takes us.
