A Review of Only Murders in the Building

Steve Martin and Martin Short reunite for a quirky new series that streams on Hulu

On Hulu, the popular show known as Only Murders in the Building is set in a fictional apartment complex in New York known as the Arconia. Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin play the show’s three main characters. The characters’ names are Mabel, Oliver, and Charles, they all happen to be true crime fans. Considering this detail, they all bond over listening to the same podcast together. Eventually, a true-crime of their very own occurs at the Arconia. A dead man is found in his apartment, and police say it was suicide. However, Mabel, Oliver, and Charles suspect it to be a murder and start their own investigation, searching for clues and suspects.

As part of their investigation, the group interview the Arconia’s strange residents. Their unfortunate predicament is that no one knows who the murder victim was; all there was to know about him were the numerous complaints that had been filed against him. It was clear no one wanted him in the Arconia. As a result, the suspect list became increasingly long. Eventually, there will come a point where we will have to ask: If there is a murderer, who did it?

Only Murders in the Building was written by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. Having a podcast being created for the show just seemed right. The podcast’s first episode featured John Hoffman’s concept of “classic New York meets modern New York.” Mabel’s character is a “modern New Yorker” who can also speak on more classic New York topics, like the Hardy Boys book series that came out in 1927. Oliver and Charles were, of course, the two classic New Yorkers, resulting in a unique trio of characters.
