“Where Midwest hospitality meets breezy coastal charm, Plank Provisions in the Old Market is your go-to spot to unwind,” reads the restaurant’s website—a statement that, surprisingly, lives up to its promise. With a bright, nautical interior and a menu that reads like a postcard from the coast, Plank brings the seaside experience to landlocked Omaha. Their offerings range from raw and chilled Mediterranean-style soups and salads to sandwiches and a variety of “Seafood Starters” designed to transport diners straight to the shore. Our group—Rocco, Olivia, Angel, Jack, and Corinne—decided to start with oysters, the most talked-about item on the menu.

Serving of ‘Broiled Oysters’ (Corinne Van Winkle)

The staff cracked them open fresh before our eyes, serving them with two different hot sauces and a homemade dressing. While saltine crackers were absent, we made do, intrigued by the simplicity of the presentation. For Jack and Rocco, seasoned oyster veterans, the experience lived up to expectations. For first-timers Angel and Corinne, however, the verdict was mixed: “like sipping the ocean,” Angel said, describing the flavor as salty, briny, and distinctly marine—with a slippery texture that takes some getting used to. Still, between laughter, hesitant first bites, and the shared adventure of trying something new, it was clear that Plank Provisions delivered on its promise of coastal delight—no coastline required.

Ambient lighting floods the spacious place of dining while wood paved the walls. Mimicking a ship with banisters hanging from above leave any client with a satisfactory experience.

Beyond oysters, our table took a culinary tour through Plank’s signature dishes—Baja Shrimp Ceviche, Crispy Rice Cakes, Lobster and Shrimp Pasta, Grilled Shrimp Tacos, and Wonton Tuna Tacos. Each dish brought something distinct to the table, showcasing the restaurant’s balance between coastal freshness and creative presentation. The Baja Shrimp Ceviche was refreshingly light and simple, featuring generous chunks of shrimp and avocado served with one oversized chip perfect for scooping. Every bite was bright and citrusy—an ideal starter. The Crispy Rice Cakes, topped with spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and cilantro, packed a punch. Rocco found them a bit too fiery, but still appreciated the bold flavor and crisp texture. Jack, on the other hand, called them a “perfect flavor explosion in one bite.”

Lobster and Shrimp Pasta (Rocco Vigneri)

Next came the Lobster and Shrimp Pasta, which surprised the group. While Olivia expected an Alfredo-style sauce, the dish arrived in a light orange-red sauce that leaned more toward tomato than cream. Despite the unexpected flavor profile, it became Rocco and Jack’s top pick for its rich seafood taste and perfectly cooked pasta that absorbed the sauce beautifully, the same couldn’t be said for Angel and Olivia.

The Grilled Shrimp Tacos quickly became a favorite for Angel and Olivia. The tacos were vibrant, fresh, and full of flavor—though admittedly messy to eat. The creamy jalapeño sauce added heat, but not everyone thought it complemented the shrimp perfectly.

Wonton Tuna Tacos

Finally, the Wonton Tuna Tacos stood out for their presentation: bite-sized crispy shells filled with spicy tuna, creamy jalapeño, ponzu, and grilled pineapple salsa. The crunchy shell and balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy flavors made them a satisfying one-bite delight.

Overall, Plank Provisions proved that even in the middle of Nebraska, you can experience flavors bold enough to rival the coast. From tangy ceviche to buttery pasta, every dish told its own story—one that left our group both full and curious for more. Plank offers a refreshingly coastal twist in the heart of Omaha, with a menu that challenges even cautious eaters to step outside their comfort zone. For many of us, it was our first time trying several seafood delicacies, and the experience felt both surprising and adventurous. While the prices lean toward the higher side outside of happy hour, the quality and presentation make it worth stopping in for appetizers or a light meal. If you’re a seafood lover, Plank Provisions is a must-visit—its mix of flavors, textures, and freshness make it stand out from typical Omaha fare. However, if seafood isn’t your thing, this might not be your go-to spot unless you’re feeling daring enough to dive into something new. Either way, Plank delivers a coastal experience that’s both memorable and worth the taste test.
