Stranger Things Season 5: Hawkins’ Finale

A disappointing ending from the highly regarded series.

From its 2016 debut to now, in 2025, Stranger Things has been one of the most defining shows of the past decade. What has been known as a cultural phenomenon is now at an end. What has been in the making for almost ten years is now complete, with the fifth and final season released in three parts: Volume 1 on November 26, 2025, Volume 2 on Christmas Day, and the series finale on New Year’s Eve.

The most anticipated show of 2025, receiving the most traction out of any other show, left audiences disappointed in its result.

The first 4 episodes of Season 5 open with the immediate fallout from Season 4’s devastating finale, as the rift between the Upside Down and Hawkins widens. In Season 4, we can see residents evacuating Hawkins, now, as in the new season, Hawkins is trapped under control; military vehicles swarm the streets and barricades, and a fencing line is placed to contain the town. This once-small Indiana town is now in distress, signalling that Vecna’s presence has not yet abated.

This highly anticipated series has brought on serious feedback after what was expected to be the best season of the entire series; it has failed to satisfy most audiences. Nationwide debate sparked as many viewers were left distraught, and even unhappy with the finale’s ending. Fans argued that the Duffer brothers left ‘plot-gaps’ where many events were left unsolved, and certain characters like Dustin’s girlfriend, Susie, and the fan favorite, Argyle, were never cleared as to where these characters had gone, after having significant participation in the fourth season.

Many fans expressed frustration over how the show handled long-running character arcs. For instance, Eleven and Mike’s relationship, which had been carefully developed over four seasons, ended abruptly with minimal emotional payoff, leaving viewers feeling disconnected from a storyline they had invested in for years. Hopper’s return from the Upside Down, while initially thrilling, was followed by a rushed resolution that failed to explore the trauma he had endured or its impact on his relationships. Even secondary characters, like Steve and Nancy, were sidelined, with their arcs concluding in ways that felt underdeveloped compared to previous seasons. These rushed or incomplete, resolutions contributed to a sense that the season prioritized spectacle over the character-driven storytelling that originally made Stranger Things resonate.

Many longtime viewers also felt that the emotional buildup from previous seasons did not fully pay off. Relationships that had been slowly developed over the years seemed rushed or brushed aside, leaving fans feeling disconnected from moments that were supposed to be meaningful. Some critics pointed out that the show focused more on action and visual effects than on the character-driven storytelling that originally made Stranger Things stand out.

Social media quickly filled with mixed reactions, ranging from disappointment to full breakdown-style reactions from devoted fans who had grown up with the series. While some praised the cinematography and darker tone, others believed the heart and nostalgia that once defined the show were missing. For a series that shaped pop culture for nearly a decade, many viewers expected a conclusion that tied together the storylines, honored every major character, and delivered a more satisfying emotional closure.

Conformity Gate, a Stranger Things theory spreading across social media, has sparked widespread discussion and debate. Fans were so disappointed by the way the season concluded that they created a theory about an unreleased ninth episode. From Easter eggs on Instagram and TikTok to hints dropped in the show, fans concluded there would be a ninth episode in which Vecna was actually tricking the audience. The theory suggested that Vecna had been manipulating events all season, with a hidden ninth episode meant to reveal that the finale itself was part of his deception. This was a popular This was a popular theory that spread quickly across social media, with one TikTok video explaining Conformity Gate reaching 3.5 million views in a single day. Over the platforms TikTok and Instagram #conformitygate had hundreds of thousands of users. When no ninth episode was released on January 7th it is safe to say fans were devastated. The Duffer Brothers, the creators of the show, quickly denied the theory, saying there was never a plan for a ninth episode. The brothers even got threats after the news of no episode. After confirming there would be no ninth episode, the brothers were even sent threatening messages.

While the theory captured the imagination of fans and dominated social media, the Duffers’ response made it clear that the season’s story ended as intended. While the Duffers have suggested that more Stranger Things episodes could air in the future, some fans speculate this is simply because the creators are worried about running out of money.
