This past Saturday night, the girls’ basketball team played College View in the Frontier Conference championship game. The girls have made it to the championship the past nine years in a row and have come away with a victory in eight of those games.
The team had previously faced College View Academy earlier this year and won by 19 points, but with both teams eager to claim the title, this matchup proved to be more rigorous than the first. The girls arrived confident but became a little more unsettled after watching the boys’ varsity team lose in their championship game. Still, they stayed hopeful and started the game determined to win.
Riley Mann opened the scoring, putting up seven points in the first quarter and helping the team take a 19–11 lead into halftime. Heading into the third quarter, the girls’ confidence never wavered, especially Taylor Rewczuk’s. With her teammates in foul trouble, she stepped up and scored eight points from the top of the paint. Her performance helped carry the team through the quarter, even as sophomore Ana Gibbs fouled out on a series of questionable calls.

College View never gave up, and with one minute left in the game, the score was tied 37–37. Hoping to avoid overtime, the Raiders found themselves at the free-throw line, something the girls practice constantly for moments like this. Avery sank one of her two free throws, which wasn’t quite enough to calm the nerves. But with just a few seconds remaining, senior Corbett Lanum was resilient at the line, knocking down both of her free throws and securing first place for the Raiders.

With the Frontier Conference championship win in the books, making them champions in nine of the last ten years, their season is far from over. Their next game is Tuesday, February 3, at Heartland Christian. They will play twice more after that this week, so come out and support your girls’ basketball team.
