Last night was the game we’ve all been waiting for: the Super Bowl. NFC champions the Seattle Seahawks faced off against AFC champions, the New England Patriots. The odds were in the favor of the Seahawks and Quarterback Sam Darnold, however anything is possible when it comes to football.
Right away, the Seahawks set the tone, scoring a field goal on their first drive. While it was clear that both teams had solid defense, the Seattle’s defense remained strong throughout the game. The second quarter was similar, with Seattle scoring two more field goals. Before Bad Bunny’s exciting halftime show, the Seahawks were leading 9-0.
The third quarter was quite uneventful, except for the first turnover of the game. Quarterback Drake Maye was sacked, then fumbled, and the Seahawks recovered the ball. The only scoring in the quarter was another field goal by Seattle’s kicker, Jason Myers. Myers would go to set a record for most field goals in a game.
The first Seattle touchdown was at the beginning of the fourth quarter: a pass to AJ Barner. About a minute later, Maye threw a touchdown pass to Mack Hollins. After another field goal, the score was now 22-7, but Maye fumbled once again. Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu retrieved the ball to score Seattle’s final touchdown. In attempt to catch up, the Patriots got another touchdown, then attempted (and failed) an onside kick.
At that point, it was clear that the Seahawks had sealed their victory and the Lombardi Trophy— with a 29-13 lead. The MVP award went to Seattle running back Kenneth Walker III for his outstanding performance of 135 yards. As the Seahawks call themselves, the “Dark Side Defense” had done their job.
