In an exciting men’s basketball championship, the Michigan Wolverines defeated the UConn Huskies 69-63. Michigan had been the first seed in the Midwest, while UConn had been ranked second in the East Region. The Wolverines had a 37-3 record heading into the game and the Huskies were 34-6.

According to an ESPN article written this morning by Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf, “UConn controlled the tempo early” and “the game mostly trended in the Huskies’ direction”. This quickly changed in the few minutes before halftime, and Michigan went on a 10-4 scoring run. The Wolverines came back, heading into the second half with a 33-29 lead.

A key moment was Trey McKenney’s 3-pointer two minutes before the game ended, giving Michigan a nine point lead. Medcalf added that “McKenney’s 3 pointer seemed to seal the national championship for the Wolverines.”

Michigan had also made this win historical, given that their last national championship title was in 1989. In addition, this game was the first national championship win for the Wolverines’s head coach Dusty May.

While some brackets had Michigan winning, like loyal supporter Quinn Iverson, who shared that much of her family are Wolverine fans, many did not—but fans are already excited for next year!
