This past weekend, Brownell Talbot’s theater program took the stage with The Unsinkable Molly Brown, delivering a performance that was as meaningful as it was memorable. The show, which tells an inspiring story about immigration, resilience, and the importance of welcoming others, felt especially close to home for everyone involved.

Recently, our theater faced a major setback after a flood caused damage to the space. For a while, it was uncertain how or when productions would return. But through determination and support, our program was selected as one of only 22 schools nationwide to receive a $10,000 grant to put on a show. That opportunity made this production possible and marked a fresh start for the entire department. Our audience members had a lot to say about the show and its impact.

After months of rehearsals and hard work, the cast and crew performed three shows over the weekend, with performances on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and a final matinee on Sunday at 3 p.m. Each show brought strong energy, full audiences, and a clear sense of pride from everyone on stage and behind the scenes.

Our two main leads were seniors Mahalet Kinde and Elijah Hager Buchan, who carried the story with confidence and heart. They were joined by several other senior performers in leading roles, making this show especially significant for the graduating class.

Sunday’s performance was particularly emotional, as it marked the final show for 11 seniors who have been a core part of the theater program. For many, it was not just the end of a production, but the end of years of memories, although our seniors will surely go on to make many more.

Doing this show celebrated the tapestry of people that we have in our theater department, and the message of the show demonstrated the importance of welcoming new people, no matter where they come from. Our department was interviewed by news channels because of our determination in creating this show.

More than anything, this production showed what makes theater special. It is not just about putting on a show, but about the people who come together to create it. From actors to crew members, everyone played a role in bringing this story to life. The sense of community was clear throughout the entire process.

Theater has a positive impact on so many people, and we are so grateful that we were able to have another show with such a loving community.

In the end, The Unsinkable Molly Brown was more than a performance. It was a reflection of resilience, teamwork, and gratitude. After everything the program has been through, being able to rebuild, perform, and celebrate together made this weekend one that will not be forgotten.
