Unlike many professionals these days, Mrs. Sailors wanted to be a teacher since day one. As a child, she would play “school” with her sister, and even had an old wooden desk from a schoolhouse to play with.

From kindergarten to 8th grade, Mrs. Sailors “went to a one-room country school”. Students would go up to the teacher’s desk, learn a lesson, then return to their seats to work on homework. Mrs. Sailors enjoyed both her education and all the extracurriculars available in high school, alongside staying hardworking in her classes.

Mrs. Sailors attended University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education. During her time in college, she got married and had two children, which slightly extended her attendance.

Mrs. Sailors chose to become a math teacher because she “found out how much fun it was to problem solve and do mathematics”. Since her school offered limited class options, she studied calculus on the only computer available there. Mrs. Sailors exclaimed that she “was in high school when we didn’t even have a calculator!”

When she began to retire from public school teaching, Mrs. Sailors felt that she couldn’t see herself doing something else. One of her colleagues saw a BT ad on LinkedIn and she applied for the job that day.

Mrs. Sailors plans to stay at BT as long as possible. “I continue to enjoy teaching and being around students,” she said, “and I try to shared the joy of mathematics!”

To drop some wisdom on current students, Mrs. Sailors added that “life will get hard, but you can persevere if you keep a positive attitude and never give up on your dreams.”
