For the last edition of teacher feature, I decided to interview our campus celebrity, Mrs. Carrie Rise. Recently leading her robotics team 1028 A to win the Vex World Championship, there was no one better for the job! It’s not surprising that Mrs. Rise knew she wanted to both teach and coach since a young age— given that her Grandma was a teacher and she loved school.
Mrs. Rise started to play organized sports in seventh grade. “I played basketball in the driveway and played every sport I could,” she explained. Mrs. Rise switched from class C to class A in junior year, and had to balance sports, school, and work.

For college, Mrs. Rise went to Midland University and double majored in Mathematics and Secondary Education. She played basketball and minored in Computer Science as well. Mrs. Rise wanted to try teaching, and said she would use her “math degree to get a job in the private sector” if it didn’t work.

Then, Mrs. Rise attended a teacher fair with “a speed dating style interview”. She ended up conversing with the principal of BT and found that it was a perfect fit for her. Mrs. Rise plans to keep on teaching and coaching, and after her recent victory at Worlds, no one can argue otherwise! She also wants to travel with her husband and visit her family during the summer.

Here’s what Mrs. Rise had to say to current students: “Put in the work. Not much in life comes for free. But also enjoy the journey, the ups and the downs. Success is much sweeter when you the path isn’t easy.”
