Food Review: Kauai, Hawaii
Sharing food from different cultures is important as it promotes cultural understanding and appreciation. It allows people to explore and expand their culinary horizons. This is why I decided to write this article and share my appreciation for Kauai’s amazing culture.
Kauai is known for its diverse culinary scene, which features a blend of traditional Hawaiian cuisine, Asian flavors, and contemporary dishes. While in Hawaii for one week this month, I got to experience many new delicious foods. A couple of the dishes I tried were coconut shrimp, poke, and shaved ice.
Coconut shrimp is a popular dish that can be found in many restaurants throughout Kauai. Shrimp are coated in a sweet coconut batter and then fried until crispy. The shrimp was served to me with a sweet mango chili sauce. I tried this dish in multiple different restaurants around Kauai and the quality of the shrimp varies. Some places used high-quality shrimp with fresh coconut, while others used lower-quality ingredients. If you find a place that serves high-quality coconut shrimp you won’t be disappointed.
Poke has also become very popular, and can be found in many restaurants and grocery stores in Hawaii and other parts of the United
States. Some popular types of poke include ahi (yellowfin tuna), salmon, and tako(octopus). The poke I tried included rice, avocado, sesame seeds, onion, and other ingredients depending on what restaurant I was at. If you love seafood and enjoy trying new dishes, poke is definitely worth a taste during a trip to Kauai or Hawaii in general.
Shaved ice is the perfect dessert to go with your delicious meals in Kauai. It is made by shaving a block of ice and then adding flavored syrups on top. Popular flavors in Kauai are passion fruit, guava, and lychee, but there are many other flavors to choose from as well. One unique way some places serve shaved ice is by adding a scoop of ice cream to the bottom of the bowl. This dessert was my favorite of all the dishes I tried, most likely because of my enormous sweet t
ooth.
Kauai has many delicious foods to try. Even though Kauia is known for its fresh delicious seafood there is something for every taste preference. Whether you love seafood or have more of a sweet tooth, you’re sure to find something that you love in Kauai. I give my Kauai food experience an 11/10!
