On February 2, 2026, the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. Unfortunately, this indicates that we will face six more weeks of winter. Unknown to most, Punxsutawney Phil is not the only groundhog who looks at his shadow in February. There are multiple more groundhogs throughout the United States, with varying degrees of accuracy. Punxsutawney Phil, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, only has a 35%-39% rate of correct predictions. Regardless of the accuracy, it looks like the Brownell Talbot community is going to face some more frigid days this year.
This 2025-2026 school year has been notable due to the lack of snow days or other days off because of harsh weather. According to Mr. Smith. “In the 18 years I’ve been at BT I think there’s been a snow day every year.” Despite days that were well in the negatives, the snow has not come like it has nearly every year. According to the groundhogs, it is likely that we will have more cold, dreary days without the relief of a day off of school.
Fun Facts:
- “A groundhog’s average lifespan is 6-8 years, but Phil regularly drinks a magic elixir that extends his life by seven years.”
- The very first Groundhog Day (1886), involved eating the groundhog meat and was described as a cross between chicken and pork.
- Groundhogs are also very similar to catcallers because they attract attention of a potential mate by whistling.
- Phil has a wife named Phyllis who helps him with his duties. On their off days they rest quietly at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.
